Luther Strayer, a professor of geology at California State University, East Bay and co-leader of the seismic study, explains why his team is drilling a series of holes dozens of feet deep. Within two weeks they plan to set off tiny underground explosions inside those holes along 10 miles of the fault, triggering two dozen minuscule earthquakes.
