My Grandma June raised me after my mom died. She picked me up from school, packed my lunches, and became both my mom and my best friend all in one. When I was ten, my dad remarried Carla — a woman who always looked at us like she smelled something rotten. Once I started high school, Carla suddenly wanted to be seen as “the perfect stepmom.” She’d post pictures of us with captions like “Proud of my boy!” even though she BARELY talked to me at home.
