It’s one of the catchiest songs of the 80s, but the title is total gibberish. Phil Collins didn’t sit down to write a song about a girl named Sussudio. He was just jamming with a drum machine, improvising vocals to find a melody. The sound “sus-sussudio” just popped out to match the beat. He spent weeks looking through dictionaries to find a “real” word that fit the rhythm. He couldn’t find one. So, he gave up and decided the gibberish was the lyric. The result? A #1 hit built on a placeholder.
