The Trump administration has released $175 million in previously frozen federal funding to the University of Pennsylvania, a White House official told CNN on Wednesday, following an agreement on how the university would handle transgender athletes.

The University of Pennsylvania’s decision this week to sign an agreement with the Trump administration committing to barring transgender athletes from its women’s sports teams is raising questions about whether other schools might do the same faced with the weight of the federal government.

The agreement requires the university to follow Title IX as interpreted by the Department of Education and adopt Trump's executive order defining sex as biological.
