New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency Saturday afternoon as dozens of fire departments responded to Long Island’s Pine Barrens to gain control of massive brush fires fueled by strong winds.

Dozens of fire departments and the National Guard were working on Saturday to extinguish multiple wildfires scorching the Pine Barrens and spreading for miles along the Sunrise Highway.

The wildfires began accidentally when someone in Suffolk County tried to light a fire to make s’mores, officials said. They were fully contained by Monday.
