The historic SS United States cruised past Palm Beach County on its way to Alabama for cleaning before becoming an artificial reef off Florida.

Crews will spend about six months cleaning the 1,000-foot vessel and removing hazardous materials as they prepare it to eventually be sunk off Florida's Gulf coast.

The Newport News-built SS United States has completed the first leg of its final voyage. Plans are in place to turn it into the world's largest artificial reef.
