Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Monday the Trump administration had finished its six-week purge of programs of the six-decade-old U.S. Agency for International Development, cutting 83% of them, and said he would move the remaining aid programs under the State Department.

The cuts come as the Trump administration seeks to reorient its approach to foreign policy and government spending. A freeze on foreign aid funds has already left groups around the world at a critical point.

The Trump administration has closed more than 80% of programs and 5,200 contracts at the U.S. Agency for International Development, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, as his department concluded its review of the agency charged with dispensing overseas aid.
