South Korea’s Constitutional Court could soon rule whether to dismiss or reinstate impeached conservative President Yoon Suk Yeol.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who lawmakers voted to impeach and was indicted on criminal charges for declaring martial law last December, was cleared to be released from detention on Friday.

TV footage showed Mr Yoon coming out of a prison in Seoul, waving his hand and bowing to his supporters. The president declared martial law in December, throwing South Korea into turmoil. He banned political activity and sent armed soldiers inside the parliament, which nonetheless reversed his decision within six hours.

SEOUL, South Korea — A South Korean court on Friday ordered impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol to be released from jail, a move that could allow Yoon to stand trial for his rebellion charge without being physically detained.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who lawmakers voted to impeach, was released from detention Saturday after spending nearly two months in custody under a criminal probe for his martial law declaration.

The Constitutional Court said Tuesday it will deliver its ruling on the impeachment trial of three prosecutors and the head of the Board of Audit and Inspection on Thursday.
