An EF-1 tornado touched down in Irving, Texas earlier this week, heavily damaging buildings in the area and bringing down power lines.

A temporary shelter has been set up at Georgia Farrow Recreation Center in Irving after apartment buildings suffered extensive damage, police say.

Hundreds of people are out of their homes after a strong thunderstorm damaged multiple apartment buildings in Irving early Tuesday morning.

Much of North Texas remained under a severe thunderstorm warning and a thunderstorm watch Tuesday morning as high winds and heavy rain pummeled the region. The National Weather Service’s Fort Worth office extended the thunderstorm warning to 6:30 a.m., while the tornado watch was in effect until 11 a.m.

The National Weather Service in Fort Worth sent a team that determined the damage in Irving was caused by at least one tornado.

In the aftermath of Tuesday's devastating storms, a second EF-1 tornado is believed to have occurred in North Texas, according to the National Weather Service.

An EF-1 tornado struck Irving at about 5:24 a.m., lasting about one minute and traveling less than a half-mile, from Pecan Drive to North O’Connor Road.
