A study of the Nuvvuagittuq Greenstone Belt found that its rocks go back to the Hadean Eon, making them the ideal candidate for the oldest rock.

Two different testing methods found that rocks from an area called the Nuvvuagittuq Greenstone Belt in northern Quebec date to 4.16 billion years ago, a time known as the Hadean eon. The eon is named after the ancient Greek god of the underworld, Hades, owing to the hellish landscape thought to have existed then on Earth.

Canadian researchers said they'd found the world's oldest rocks in northern Quebec. The find was controversial. But after more than a decade of hard work, they believe they've really proven it and are giving scientists a new glimpse into Earth's early history.
