The San Diego Padres have landed closer Mason Miller and left-handed starting pitcher JP Sears from the Athletics in a blockbuster trade deadline deal, the team announced Thursday. The return includes top shortstop prospect Leodalis De Vries, who ranked No. 3 on CBS Sports' midseason rankings.

After acquiring closer Mason Miller and starter JP Spears from the A's on Thursday, the Padres now have decisions to make on Dylan Cease and Robert Suárez.

In the weeks before the trade deadline, San Diego general manager A.J. Preller and his assistants made a detailed list of areas in which the Padres wanted to improve their roster before the pennant race began in earnest.
