Pablo Reyes stumbled, stopped and still scrambled home safely on a wild play in the eighth inning Thursday night, taking advantage of a throwing error by reliever Lucas Erceg to give the New York Yankees a 1-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

It wasn’t easy for Yankees manager Aaron Boone to stick with a lineup plan for Thursday night that was in the cards for more than a week.

Thursday night’s series finale at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Mo., featured an old-school pitchers’ duel between Will Warren and Seth Lugo. But it was Paul Goldschmidt’s go-ahead RBI single in the top of the eighth that gave the Yankees the 1-0 victory and helped complete the sweep of the Kansas City Royals.

Aaron Judge, who had struck out three times, hit a 443-foot solo home run off Garrett Crochet with one out in the ninth, but a two-out RBI single by Carlos Narvaez in the 10th won it.
