Five-time major winner Rory McIlroy had a disappointing first round at the US Open and got off to an even worse start in the second.

Don't expect lower numbers in the afternoon, as Oakmont is only going to get tougher. As for Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau, it's been a grind, with both struggling on their second nines to remain in contention.

OAKMONT, Pa. — First Rory McIlroy flung an iron down the 12th fairway. Then he used driver to demolish a tee marker on 17. He might not win the sportsmanship award at the U.S. Open, but he will get to play on the weekend.

Rory McIlroy lashed out at the toughest golf course in the country Friday as Oakmont Country Club continued to bare its teeth at the 156 men competing in the 2025 U.S. Open. Though McIlroy was hardly the only golfer to be frustrated by the difficulties he faced in Western Pennsylvania, he was perhaps the most demonstrative of the bunch.

Rory McIlroy’s stay in the U.S. Open field nearly lasted just two days. But a birdie on the 18th hole salvaged his second round (2-over) to get him through two days at 6-under at Oakmont Country Club, barely sneaking past the cutline nine years after he missed the cut the last time the major was held at Oakmont.
