Amazon Web Services experienced a major outage on Oct. 20 that disrupted many websites and apps, including Snapchat.

An Amazon Web Services outage Oct. 20, has caused websites and social media platforms to crash, leaving customers with nearly 12 hours of delays.

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud provider behind many of these platforms, is at fault for the disruption. It began reporting faults across multiple AWS services in the US-EAST-1 region at midnight Pacific Time, with the underlying DNS issue fully mitigated by 3AM PDT.

According to the AWS service health page, Amazon was looking into "increased error rates and latencies for multiple AWS services" in the US-EAST-1 region (i.e. data centers in Northern Virginia) as of 3:11AM ET on Monday.

Social media apps including Snapchat, Facebook, and Reddit saw a sharp rise in reports of connectivity issues. At its peak, the Snapchat-related reports reached over 7,000 globally. Delta Air Lines and United Airlines experienced disruptions, per DownDetector, along with telecommunications provider AT&T.

A Domain Name System error that originated from Amazon's largest and oldest data center took down major sites Monday. The outage has been resolved.
