The heavy downpours wreaked havoc across the city with footage showing commuters overwhelmed by floodwaters in various subway stations.
When the train doors opened, "quite a lot of water came in, so almost all of us stood up on the seats," a passenger told Newsweek.
Numerous flash floods had been reported across New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, closing roads and highways, submerging cars, and stranding motorists, according to the National Weather Service. Metro-North reported suspensions of service on part of the Harlem line, and some delays on the New Haven line, as well, which has since been reopened.
Parts of New York City and Northern New Jersey were inundated on Monday night as widespread thunderstorms moved through.
