Ottawa has sought a thaw with Beijing as part of a larger effort to diversify trade as Trump threatens to use “economic force” to make Canada the 51st state.

Prime Minister Mark Carney's new approach to Canada's foreign policy can perhaps be distilled in one line: "We take the world as it is, not as we wish it to be."

Carney's visit comes after almost a decade of strained ties between Ottawa and Beijing.

Britain’s main opposition leader joined a demonstration Saturday against China’s planned new embassy in London, days before a deadline for the government to approve or block the project. Opponents say the proposed complex is close to crucial data cables and will be used as a spy hub and to intimidate of Chinese dissidents in exile.

The Government is facing mounting calls to reject Beijing’s plans for the embassy at Royal Mint Court over security concerns.
